Queen of the Damned

Buy This Item Queen of the Damned  Available from Amazon  $12.20  on 8-25-2008     This is an entertaining movie, not good, but yet not completely bad. I downloaded it after finishing the three first Vampire Chronicles books and I was already warned about the terrible plot mistakes that it incurs in, otherwise I would have felt as much offended as other Anne Rice fans that had watched the movie with higher expectations. I wasn't surprised by the absence of Louis, Marius as Lestat's maker, Jesse as his love interest, or by the cheesy media-goth airs that everything on the movie had. I found it hilarious; this movie is so bad that it is almost good, if such a thing is possible. I actually enjoyed it, it serves its purpose: to become another sexy, cheesy vampire movie, kinda cool but horribly shallow. <br />What I really hated about the movie was the casting. Akasha didn't look like Egyptian and poor Aaliyah's acting was terrible, besides the fact that, being a gorgeous girl, she looked uglier than ever, especially when she was turn into a statue (she really needed makeup!). Jesse and David looked too young, Maharet looked too old, and Marius was yuck, ugly, as much as the other actors playing vampire roles (Anne Rice's vampires are supposed to be beautiful). The actor playing Armand was the most miscast of all, is it so difficult to find a cute youth and dye his hair auburn? <br />I think that Stuart Townsend played very well as vampire, though he couldn't grasp Lestat's personality. Regarding his look, I think that he was a better choice than Tom Cruise, but still, he's not as beautiful as Lestat is supposed to be and needed blond hair and blue eyes to actually look like him. <br />I also missed Louis; he's one of my favorite characters besides Lestat and Armand. I assume that the directors of this movie are homophobic or just didn't find cool those parts in which Louis and Lestat kiss and hold each other, but that's not a valid reason to cut Louis from the picture and replace him with Jesse, she and Lestat had very little to do with each other in the book. <br />In conclusion, watch this movie if you're curious or if you like lightweight vampire movies, this is an amusing one. But if you'd like to know what the real plot is about and who the characters truly are, read The Vampire Lestat and TQOTD, excellent books.
