The Japanese fighting man has been shown, not without justification, as the single-minded fanatic that will die for his Emperor and take as many of the enemy with him. Eastwood endeavors to demonstrate that there were Japanese who hated the privations inflicted by being on that island just as much as the Americans who conquered it. Japanese who would rather be at home or on their horses. But it was their tragic sense of duty that ensured that of the original strength of 25,000 that only a few hundred survived. The testamenmt to their bravery and endurance is found throughout this feature in their correspondence. Hence the title.
