It has a all star cast. The Main family and the Hazard family are the vocal point of the movie. It is a love story as well as a civil war story. The era that it is set in was prior the civil war and up thru the civil war. It's about two families, one from the south and one from the north. You truly get wrapped up into their lives and their struggle to maintain their friendship through out the saga. If you have never seen this movie, it's a must see!!!! My children are all grown and they all have copies of this movie as well as myself. They agree this is the best movie ever produced!!!! Reader Reviews Books I and II are done wonderfully. The settings, the clothing, the acting, and the music are all about as close to perfection as you can get! The opening score, done by Bill Conti, just grabs the listener and doesn't let go. North and South offers something to the Civil War buff (you can sit there and discuss what is accurate and what is not) and all the way down to someone wanting to watch a good romance (plenty of relationships to pick from and enjoy). While based on fiction, it paints a pretty realistic antebellum and Civil War-Era United States. Historically, there are some things that are not completely accurate but for the most part, John Jakes did a great job fitting his two families into the period. As other viewers have suggested, it is best if you skip Book III. If you really want to see it, go ahead and watch it but don't expect much. It is no where near the quality of the first two installments. Only 6 cast members from Books I and II came back for the third piece so that could be part of the awful production. The fact Book III was produced after an almost decade hiatus may be another reason it's not even comparable. Book III is included in the set so it's not like you have to buy it serperately.
