Reader Reviews I'm no animal rights activist, by any means. But, I have been following both legal and illegal shark finning for a while. I enjoy SCUBA Diving so on the rare occasion you see a shark in it's natural habitat it is beautiful. Rob Stewart does an amazing job of shedding light on this Shark Finning epidemic. He doesn't argue that sharks deserve rights, and are on par with humans. He does argue however that sharks are important to our very existence. Why? Sharks are a Key Stone Predator. This means where sharks aren't the surrounding ecosystem suffers. With out sharks to regulate Predator fish and mammals then those Predators would eat to their hearts content. This would cause major problems in Kelp forests and Coral Reefs. The problem even goes as far as Planktons. The ocean produces the majority of our oxygen, Plankton helps this process. What eats Plankton, various Fish and mammals. What eats these Fish and Mammals? Sharks. These sharks keep the population in check. Rob Stewart does a much better job of explaining this than I do. He also points our the use of Long Lines. These are 100's of miles of fishing wire with hooks attached. There is no way to no what these lines catch until the fishermen bring them up. They catch everything from sea turtles to large sharks. He then points out that if trappers put out 100's of miles of animal traps for small game, people would go nuts with the inhumane protests. Where why aren't people doing the same with this? What's out of sight is out of mind... I do not remember the exact number of how many sharks are killed yearly, but it is something a long these lines. 3 sharks die every second. 750,000 Sharks die a day. 350,000,000 Sharks die a year. He estimates that if this continues sharks may be extinct by 2015. Europe is in the most danger of losing sharks from their oceans. They have even gone as far as putting out Finning laws to protect sharks. The fishermen just found a loophole in the laws.
