Why is Denise Austin reissuing her old, outdated workouts? This is a rerelease of a 1988 beginning-level workout. It features a young, cute, and perky Denise Austin leading an old-fashioned and dull high- and low-impact aerobic routine that will only interest novice exercisers who prefer to repeat moves without thinking. After the humdrum warm-up, Austin leads 120 step-touches in a row, varied only by an arm-movement change every 40 step-touches. The high-impact moves are no better: 30 hop-heels, 74 hop-kicks, 48 hop-side-swings, 150 jacks (full, half, and heel jacks). You get the picture. The endless repetitions are not only dreary, they're risky because repetitive stress is more likely to lead to injury than varied moves. (Exercise professionals have known this for a decade.)<p> The "toning" portion includes a standing, upper-body routine, which is ineffective because she doesn't use weights or other resistance, a decent ab routine, and traditional floor work for the thighs and buttocks.<p> If you like Denise Austin, do yourself a favor and pick one of her more recent videos. <I>--Joan Price</I>

Not to mention boring. If you're at a good level of fitness, this tape may work for you. Otherwise, it will cause many joint and muscle injuries if done by a beginner, especially one who is overweight. You get 10 min. of warming up, with leg stretches that are hard to do unless you have the flexibility of Gumby. Then you have 10 min. of low-impact aerobics, 20 min. of high-impact aerobics (with lots of jumping jacks), 10 min. of toning, and 5 min. of cooldown stretching (what a relief). It helps drop lbs. quickly, but personally, I like something where I'm not jumping around. If you're big-chested and/or heavy, jumping around is going to wear you out quickly! You will feel like your lungs are going to burst out of your chest if you're not used to this kind of workout. All of these exercises are too repetitive and just plain hard. Did I mention this video was made in 1987 (and looks dated too)?
