Clarke's Mysterious World when I was 14 years old back late in 1986 on the then largely unknown Discovery Channel. I was nothing short of amazed by the series. The British narrator, the spooky synthesizer music provided by Alan Hawkshaw, and the subjects covered gave me chills up my spine. I kept watching this series for many years later, even as the Discovery Channel started "Americanizing" the series (like replacing the British narrator with an American narrator). The series was first aired on British television in 1980 on Yorkshire Television. In 1989, the series became available on videotape, six tapes and thirteen episodes, in which you can enjoy without The Discovery Channel "Americanizing" the program, so you get treated with the original theme song and the original British narrator. The Journey Begins/UFOs/Strange Skies is Volume 1 of the series. The Journey Begins mainly discusses what would be covered throughout the whole series, like giant stone balls found in Costa Rica, strange artifacts found in Iraq that could very well be the very first battery ever, total exclipses, and so much more. The second part of this tape, UFOs, covers, of course, UFOs. One story involves a guy from Scotland being attacted by a UFO, and his wife said, "There are no such things as spaceships" in an unintentionally hilarious voice. Also you get an interview with Kenneth Arnold as he flies his plane. He the same guy flying from Chehalis, Washington to Boise, Idaho in 1947, and had his famous UFO encounter near Mount Rainier that spurred off the modern-day UFO craze. The last part on this volume, Strange Skies involved subject like the canals of Mars, the Planet Vulcan (not THAT Planet Vulcan from Star Trek of course, but a planet astronomers claimed existed near Mercury back in the 19th century). In my opinion, I thought Strange Skies was the weakest of the three episodes on this tape, that's why I knocked off one star, but Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World is still a great documentary, and if you enjoy subjects on the paranormal, unexplained, UFOs, lake monsters, etc., you're bound to enjoy these series.
