This is at once an epic story of great American themes, and also a small story of one young man's too-short life. You know the tragic outcome when you begin to watch, but still you watch spellbound. Chris McCandless is - was - a fascinating combination of friendliness and engaging charm but also severity and reclusiveness - almost schizoid. The viewer is torn between wanting him to venture out to Alaska, an iconic, unspoiled wilderness, to pursue his dream and conquer his demons but also to return to those who love him and wait behind, heartbroken and fragile. Everyone who worked on making this film is to be applauded, but especially Penn and Hirsch. Hirsch's physical transformation is breathtaking, and it is important not in itself, but because it is a physical portrayal of the mythical journey McCandless undertook. It also is evidence of Hirsch's commitment to the task. Likewise Penn's judgments in directing this film were amazing. The timing, photography, pacing, and soundtrack are as significant as the plot and dialogue. It is rare and brilliant to get all these film elements right. Bravo. I do not understand why this film did not garner more acclaim. I count it as a new American classic.
