Steven Spielberg and George Lucas's 1981 resurrection of the Saturday-matinee adventure genre was deservedly popular, and kicked off a successful trilogy. Set in 1936, this first feature introduces Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and adventurer whose quests for rare antiquities frequently find him running from one menace or another. Raiders finds Dr. Jones in the middle of a Nazi plot to use the mysterious powers of the Ark of the Covenant to win the war. Karen Allen plays the love interest with an old-fashioned "man's woman" appeal (she can drink anybody under the table and is free with her fists). The constant, cliffhanger appeal of the movie is great fun--one is always wondering how Indy will get out of one scrape after another--and Ford's career got a big boost with his self-effacing but masculine portrayal of the hero. --Tom Keogh
Reader Reviews
...who don't review the product, but want a bully pulpit to complain just to read their words in print. Raiders of the Lost Ark, is in MY opinion, the greatest film of all time. You've got Ford (acting), Spielberg (directing), Lucas (story), Kasdan (screenplay) and Williams (music) ALL at the top of their form. I for one will be buying this special edition release, and I will be first in line this Christmas when the time comes (hopefully) to buy the entire series in Blu Ray. Why? Because that's my choice. And I will continue to support the filmmakers for making one of the greatest entertainments that I have had the pleasure to enjoy, time and time again in my life. I wish Amazon wouldn't allow people to 'review' products they haven't seen, but since they do, I wanted to weigh in on this commentary. For those of you with guns to your head being forced to buy this or any other DVD - take a look at the finger on the trigger and realize that it's your own. It's an odd complaint to want extras on a previous release that did not exist at the time. Shame on Lucasfilm for not releasing information about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, or interviews that had not yet taken place when the original set was released? Come on people! Lucasfilm is not the only company to reissue their product - that's an industry standard. But where they differentiate themselves is that when they put out new features, they make it worth buying - IF you're interested. That is definitely NOT the industry standard. I won't give up my original set for all the great features that were included at the time. I have every reason to believe the same will be true for these. If the thought of paying for a film offends you, rent it, download it - whatever. But don't criticize something for existing just because YOU don't want to buy it. If you've already got the original set and are happy with that, fantastic! Enjoy it forever. But again, allow the rest of us to partake of the new and improved offerings that the future will continue to hold. As Joe Bob Briggs would say, I'm surprised I have to explain all this to you. Raiders of the Lost Ark (and though the packaging may say something else, that's what it will always be - just check the opening credits) is a classic. See it any way you can, as soon as you can. I assure you, you won't be disappointed.
