The opening bank robbery is gripping. Then Jimmy Stewart comes in and steals the film as the ingenious brother who impersonates a hangman to free the Bishop gang on the gallows. I watched the film on AMC just now and for the first half hour I was thinking "Why have I never heard of this amazing western?"
I should have turned off the TV right there. The second 2/3rds is one long slow chase scene through the Mexican desert with a big shooting finish. Yawn.
