,,, that I get sleeping during a movie, but, during this one, when I was not, most of the time I was sorry I didn't. Although I like a lot of Almodovar's works, I'd like to forget he did this one. And, although I know that, 2000 years ago, some nevropaths thought that putting on a cassock gave them the right to create psychopaths on one side and to take collections from the other side so they could perpetuate their superstition (Ambrose Bierce said that the only difference between superstition and religion is a matter of duration, the 2nd one lasting longer than the 1st), I think that making fun of religious beliefs is only to enforce their strength: remember the martyrs, and how, before the talks-shows and McDos, they invented confession (soviets made a fine use of this as well) and communion. If anyone want to watch something worthwhile by Almodovar, best are 'Kika' and 'Women on the verge of nervous breakdown', then 'What I have done to deserve this?'. It's not because very nice works were <shocking> (most of the time it's not anymore a while after their release) that making 'shocking movies' should be revered, and regarded as works of art, but only as a kind of student's prank: when I was studying architecture at the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts" in Paris/France (where pranks were one of the most important things), I never met anyone thinking that any prank should be considered as a work of 'ART' (Unless, of course, it was part of the joke itself).
Reader Reviews
This classic needs an English DVD release. There have only been two versions, which are long out-of-print: a Japanese (AKA Sexilia) and an Italian DVD, both lacking English subtitles. And the VHS tapes are also out of print. All of Almodovar's work should be made available for fans to chart his artistic flowering. "Labyrinth of Passion" and "High Heels" are the only features missing from the series of UK boxsets (a hint for DVD distributors who cater to completists). Though they are not his best, weak Almodovar is much better than many auteurs' strongest efforts. I wonder if Almodovar is embarrassed by this work, or if it simply fell through the proverbial cracks during the DVD transfer revolution.
